We established already with plenty of blog posts – Mainz is worth a visit! Visit the Gutenberg Museum… see 1000 years’ old St. Martin’s Cathedral… meander through our pretty old town… enjoy the unique Chagall windows at St. Stephan’s. BUT IF YOU ARE A WINE LOVER, timing is of the essence! See that you stop in Mainz while one of our wine fests is on. Here is a short calendar of our favorite wine fests in and around Mainz in 2026.

Our favorite wine events this year:
From spring through late autumn, there is almost no weekend without a wine festival in Mainz or its neighboring Rheinhessen wine villages. Whether you’re a wine professional or a serious wine lover, these events stand out:
Mainzer WeinUfer (May 14-17, 2026): This wine festival, beautifully set along the Rhine River bank, attracts a young wine-loving crowd. Besides plenty of wine stalls this event features live music, marquees, and seating areas. This is not posh at all… a casual wine fest with beautiful views — minus the traditional folklore. The festival is at 10 minutes from Mainz City Center…5 minutes from the Hilton Hotel, 10 minutes walk from the Hyatt Mainz.
Weinfrühstück ‘Winebreakfast’ (every Saturday March-November 2026): Every Saturday morning, while the area around the cathedral features the farmers market, the historic squares nearby, ‘Leichhof’, ‘Tritonplatz’, and ‘Fischtor’ turn into open air wine-bars. Local wineries will offer a glass of wine, served next to fresh rolls and sausage. By our experience the location Fischtor is the best – a leafy area stretching between the cathedral and the Rhein River area.
Weinzeit (April 18, 2026): If you fancy a taste of the wines of Mainz, attend Weinzeit – a wine tasting event organised by the associated wineries of Mainz (Mainzer Winzer) in the historic setting of the Citadell of Mainz. 20+ wineries will offer a taste of their freshly released vintage 2025. A ticket at entrance will cover for the full tasting event, arrive in time to casually walk from table to table and get a taste of Mainz – time though is limited from 3.00 pm – 7.00 pm.
Weinmarkt Mainz (August 27-30 & September 3-6, 2026): By far the biggest and most cherished wine festival in Mainz, the Weinmarkt attracts locals and international visitors alike. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, top-tier wineries, international food stalls, and plenty of stages with live music this is the highlight of the season. Our pro-tip if you like it ‘chill’ : come in early evening before it’s getting busy and enjoy the sunset vibes. Weinmarkt takes place in the city’s main park area, Stadtpark, very close to the Hyatt hotel. From city center it’s at 25 minutes walk.

Need some guidance on how to navigate a Weinest?
At BottleStops we offer guided tours and tastings, both in and from Mainz as tastings but also as daytrips into the wine regions. Reach out if you want a private guide to show you around. Meanwhile here are a couple of good-to-knows:
- Wine events tend to be quite casual, no need to dress up
- Have some cash at hand. Many stalls accept card, but cash is king.
- Wines are typically poured at 0.2 liters – almost 7 ounces. So if you like to take it a slow, ask for a small one, casually called ‘Piffsche’ (that’s 0.1 liters – 3.5 oz).
- Wine glasses are consigned, bring them back to refund (typically 3-5 euro/glass)
- If you are in a group, buy a bottle to share – it’s much better value than by-the-glass.
- While you tip at restaurants and winebars, no tipping is expected at a winefest.
Enjoy your winefest in Mainz!
